Waiting is a comedy (and we use that term loosely) starring (and we use that term loosely) Ryan Reynolds, and for anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant, and . . . has no sense of humor and a propensity for self-mutilation . . . this movie will really hit home!
From all appearances, this movie looked like it would be a hilarious portrayal of behind-the-scenes goings-on of a Bennigans like restaurant called Shenanigans. Turns out, it was all about waiting tables and how to make big tips and screw with customers. The characters are highly pathetic loosers who are into drugs, drinking, mattress mambo, bad hygiene and a complete lack of respect for the English language. Their lives are centered around the restaurant, evening parties and a game at work showing the guy’s obsession with displaying their “private” parts. Somewhere in all of this, were sickening (we mean that literally) scenes of the cooks doing unspeakable things to the food of customers they didn’t like.
Waiting breaks new ground in the “gross and unfunny” genre. Though several of the actors provide decent performances, the characters in this movie tend to be both dull and unlikable. The plot is virtually nonexistent, and the pace is unbearable . . . all of which would be okay if the comedy were good – it is not! Writer/Director Rob McKittrick’s “shock and ah” approach just leaves audiences bored and annoyed.
